Beautiful at 30

"Kel, may ipapakita ako sa'yo" biglang sabi ni Je sabay scroll sa BlackBerry niya. We were talking and seating comfortably on that couch in Starbucks Fort and this appears to be a sudden change of topic about something serious.

"Masasaktan ba 'ko diyan?" I asked. We have been together for hours already and have talked about the important stuff so I wonder what this is going to be about this time.

"Sira!" she answered, still scrolling through her BB as if looking for something. "Nakakita kasi ako ng picture mo dati. Alam mo ang layo." sabi niya.

Ayos, thank you ah, I thought to myself. "Throwback?" I asked her.

"Oo. Throwback." she answered. As far as I know I have hidden those throwback tags from my facebook timeline to make sure nobody sees them. There were also only 2 I think.

She handed me her BB then stood up. "Basahin mo, CR lang ako." I took her phone then she walked towards the restroom.

On her phone was a note she typed and entitled Beautiful at 30 which has this quote from Jane Austen's "Persuasion". I had to read it over and over.

When she came back, she asked me what I thought of it. Paano ka ba naman magrerespond sa ganon di ba? Ugh...thank you! Wow ang douchebag! Haha. I think the first thing I said was how my skin is clearer now. "I'm healed!" I said jokingly and she laughed. I also told her how I watch what I eat and that might have contributed to it. Then I told her that I take long showers because I use body scrubs. She asked me what scrub I use, I told her that Indonesian something endorsed by Solenn Heussaff. I was surprised to find out that she doesn't know her. Then our topic jumped to how she doesn't know Solenn, Bruno Mars and Arnold Clavio. I don't remember saying thank you.

A day after that meeting, I remembered this and thought about googling that quote. This morning I posted this on her facebook wall.

By the way, this is not me basking at being beautiful. If you can see me as I type this joke na kaagad ang lahat ng ito. Besides, the quote has a sidenote about how I looked 10 years ago. Actually, if you see it the other way, one might even get insulted. Hehe. Point is, this simply means I look better now than before. I think I can agree to that.

Nakakatuwa lang isipin that a person would see a quote written years ago and be reminded of you. It also says "it sometimes happens", hindi lagi. Isa daw ako sa minsan na yun. Haha.  And yes, the best compliments are from the people who have seen you at your ugliest.

Summer 2013: Timberland Getaway

I planned to be in Boracay last April with Josie and Gherry but we were not able to book good tickets, kaya si Gherry lang ang natuloy. She met a bartender there 2 years ago, married him last year, and last month she went back there for one of those visits. It was also supposed to be our bonding trip at dahil hindi natuloy, we thought we might as well maximize na lang our office summer outing at dun na lang magbond. It was beginning to rain this time already and I feel such a loser na hindi pa ako nakakaswimming pool man lang, so I decided not to pass this up. Sa tatlong taon na may nagaganap na ganito sa office, ngayon lang ako napa-overnight.

Timberland Sports and Nature Club in San Mateo Rizal did not disappoint - maganda, masarap ang food, exclusive for members, and I got to enjoy all that for free. Minsan talaga I would rather spend weekends at home, but this outing was worth going to. My introverted personality just couldn't help but kick in though. After that program over dinner that ended almost midnight, they went to this room for some fun over alcohol but I had to ask Gherry for our room key. All the activities during the day were enough fun for me, I had to sleep. Isa na rin siguro diyan yung iniiwasan kong pilitin uminom. May pagka-anti-social din talaga ako minsan, good job na ngang sumama ako in the first place. That's enough socializing for me, "I'm taking off". Hehe.

Piktyur-piktyur!
 the jacuzzi girls
clockwise: Gherry, Josie, Butch, Aian, DC and Aisa

Destiny's Child - all bright pink, different styles
 in fair, masarap ang food
may mas mga payat sa 'kin but the joke was to give it to the skinny girl who diets endlessly

This is my only lakwatsa this summer but it was sulit indeed. I had fun.

Now What?

This year, it has been 10 years ago already since TeamFourOne graduated from college. It did not hit me until now as I write this. Ten years!

Chat and Well0ng came home for a vacation from their work abroad. They went on a summer trip to the Bicolandia and as always, I couldn't go with them because of this job. I made sure to show up though at those kitakits here in Manila when I could.

So we're getting older, how are things? Maj is married to Mike and they are pregnant. Melo just got his first car. Well0ng got married, again, to a different girl (this is supposed to be a secret). Chat is going through what I call a life crisis. Melay is not dating anyone, Jojo is now making palipad hangin.  We're basically shufflling work and leisure, trying to spice things up sometimes, still waiting for magic to happen in our mundane lives.

Here are pictures Instagram has documented about this.

This is an emo post actually.

My Non Religious Thoughts on Blue Like Jazz

I looked around for Blue Like Jazz out of curiousity, enjoyed reading the first few pages, finished it, and loved it. We have books about faith and Christianity sitting around our house but this is not like anything I've read before. I don't pride myself on being a bookworm, and I don't think I can say anything about it na hindi pa nasabi sa mga reviews. So I won't try to sound smart, instead, I will make it more personal like speaking to a friend. Kung tatanungin ako what this book is about, off the top of my head, I will say, sabi nga nila, it's about the author's faith journey and how that faith should translate to how we live our lives and interact with people. Sunday School kid ako and though I had my years of being a so-so Christian, I don't remember going through skeptism. So reading about what goes around the mind of someone who is seeking to validate God is interesting to me. Para sa 'kin, it's also a mix of simple and complex. Simple lang naman ang sinasabi niya talaga, pero yung simpleng yun hihimayin, and I remember thinking, "naisip mo pa 'yun?" Medyo naging careful din ako kasi baka maging masyadong thought provoking than I can handle, may maalog na turnilyo sa utak ko maaning ako. I should add "haha" after that sentence pero hindi na lang kasi seryoso ako at hindi masyadong joke yun. Sabi nga ng dati kong TL, he stopped watching CSI kasi he reached this point na kapag nakakita siya halimbawa ng isang bagay, he finds himself wondering how that thing got there and all deep-diving kapraningan. Same analogy here. Hehe. But aside from messing with my intellect, the booked also moved me. I am a frustrated screenwriter so particular ako sa dialogues and there were conversations in the book that I find super cute. It is also funny, think of Bob Ong. When I read a book of the latter, I see myself smiling ear to ear and maybe my shoulders would shake from time to time. But here, I laughed out loud, the thing we do while watching TV or movies. Nung natawa ako ng ganun while reading feel ko mukha akong tanga, ang weird ng feeling pramis. At syempre, when I say I was moved, kasama na diyan yung nateary eyed ako with matching "God is good", "writing is art", "life is beautiful" killer combo.

I've only read it once but I plan to read it again. Sabi nga ni Ann Coulter we have to read a book a dozen times to really appreciate it (sana hindi obvious na siningit ko yun para kunwari kilala ko siya). I texted a friend that to me, the book "is more than good writing, it is art", which by the way is such a poser to thing to say, how I wish I was making this up, but this is really something I texted, and I still cringe.

I also wanted to know what other people think about it so I checked the reviews on GoodReads and I was suprised with what I learned - half of those who reviewed the book did not like it. Apparently, some of them read it because a lot of people are talking about it, it turned out to be too hyped up for them they wound end disappointed. I also thought the book would be good for those who wanted to learn more about Christianity, but it turns out that they were the ones who were not impressed. The book appeared to have appealed more to believers, myself included. Quite a few of them comments about the book being just a glorified blog and that the author Donald Miller and is trying hard to be cool.

Here are some of what other people from GoodReads have to say about the book. Atleast these are the ones I like. Hindi naman siguro masyadong plagiarism 'to dahil hindi ko naman sila inaangkin, but these are solid points if I were to recommend or tell someone about BLJ.

Ben says:
It's not a very deep or penetrating book. If you're looking for the deeper questions of science and the existence of God, or musings on morality, this is not the place to turn. Donald Miller was no Dostoevsky, nor was he as analytical as I would've liked. I do not recommend this book for non Christians.

The tone is very informal. He's just one of the guys talking to you. His message is a positive one: focus on love and Jesus, not doctrine and religiosity. And really, his childlike look at things is refreshing at times. I did appreciate this quick and easy read, for both its entertainment value, and its ability to remind me why I'm a person of faith.

Aerin says:
The substance? There isn't much. Basically: Love is good. God is good. Humans are f****d up. But God loves us and if we love each other, everything is better.

Okay, that's nice I guess. I heard it a thousand times over in Kindergarten Sunday school, but thanks for the refresher course.

Mme. Bookling says:
I think what drives me crazy is that everyone in my "Christian" generation leans towards these trendy, faddish books that finally tell them how they feel about god, when there are so many other great theologians, philosophers, and thinkers that will challenge you.

Mitch Nichols says:
If you approach the book as one man's journey to faith told in a friendly and humorous manner then you will enjoy Blue Like Jazz. Miller didn't write it to be a definitive treatise on theological or doctrinal truths...he wrote it to express the need for a little more humility and a bolder testimony before the watching world.

Alex:
It's humble, and I believe that's its greatest strength. I believe it readily asserts how you can believe without abandoning your intellect, but it does so through the simple truths of what Christ asked people to do to each other

Seph:
Don is not a theologian, nor is this an attempt towards a systematic theology. I think there is some fuzziness to his view on Truth, and at times I wish he were more dogmatic, but Miller had no intent on making this a treatise of theology nor should we attempt to make this book into more than it is intended to be.

I don't think I will look up to Don Miller as a faith role model (I'm not a fan of his drinking and smoking hehe) but I like his writing and I am looking forward to reading his other books. :)

That Something out of an Idea

It's impossible to get a VL approved these days at work, so pinatos kong maghalf day just so I could go the screening of Jed's "I Love You Piolo" documentary. She's a friend from college who has always been into films, I remember she kept a notebook of these cool lines she heard from movies. I think nung bagong graduate kami nagkita pa kami to talk about an idea for the first Cinemalaya. It's crazy to remember this now coz Cinemalaya has since become big. Jed is also not the same girl I brainstormed with. She's far better now and I am really proud of her for pursuing her passion, because I know I did not. She's been part of many productions but this docu is something else to me because I remember 2 years ago, on that rainy night after watching a French film in Shangri-La, we talked until morning about these stuff including this idea about making a documentary about being a Piolo Pascual fan. It's all happening.

A Guy, A Girl and A Song

Hindi na siguro mangyayari sa 'kin  'to ever again, so I am posting this so I’d be reminded that once upon a beautiful Sunday afternoon, a guy asked me to sit down next to him on that gutter in BGC, and we listened to his future wedding song while he was singing along with it.

That Weekend in Antipolo

The photos below are of Brigs minus Enna in Casa Ibiza last January. Nagsimba kami together, which in itself is fun dahil bihira yun, and then went straight to Antipolo kung saan wala naman kaming bagong ginawa kundi magpicture, magfoodtrip at magkwentuhan.

This is a super late but I am posting this any way so I'd be reminded that something good happened to me after this weekend. Pwedeng-pwede ko naman 'to burahin  kapag ayaw ko na siya maalala. Haha.
